How to Request Donations for a Funeral

After dealing with a loved one's long illness, the trauma of sudden loss and the possibility of high hospital bills, a family can be devastated by funeral expenses. Because friends and other family members who know the bereaved best may realize that help is needed, it's appropriate for representatives of the family to ask for donations to help lighten the family's burden. If you expect an outpouring of help, set up an account at a local bank to protect the donations until they are used to pay the funeral home's bill.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask permission from a family member to allow you as a friend or distant family member to ask for more help for the family. Once permission is granted, ask the funeral director to include a line in the obituary that says, "In lieu of flowers, please send donations to help the family with funeral expenses to ..." the one person who is designated to oversee the account. The donations can be sent directly to the funeral home's business office. Checks should be made out to the funeral account of the deceased, e.g., Mr. John Andrew Smith.

    • 2

Purchase a notice to be placed in the death notices and "in memoriam" page of the local paper and word it to ask for help for the family. Describe the family's need and the funeral or bank account donation site where people can send donations.

    • 3

Place containers in public areas of local businesses with a sign which briefly describes the family situation and need. You must get permission for this from the store owner or manager. Set up a specific time each evening to pick up the funds.

    • 4

Get the community to help. Request that a special offering be taken at the local church of the deceased. Host a spaghetti supper and ask that community members come out and donate to the funeral fund for the deceased's family. Put posters in local stores and a public notice in the newspaper advertising the supper.

    • 5

Write a letter to various service organizations in your state and community. Explain what the family is going through and ask for donations to help them with the funeral. Nonprofits and clubs may have funds set aside for this purpose. Be sure to include the donation bank account or funeral home address, the deceased's billing account number and any pertinent information.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure that there is someone trustworthy to oversee the donations and keep a record of all monies collected so it all gets applied to the funeral bill.
