How to Find a Business Address

Finding a business address can be frustrating and time consuming, especially if you need to contact business personnel in a timely fashion. You may need to locate a furniture store for a new mattress, a restaurant for a dinner party or a dentist for an emergency root canal. Fortunately, there are several ways to find the information you need.

Visit Hoover's online (see Resources). Hoover's is a D&B company that specializes in providing international commercial business information. The easiest way to get started with Hoover's is to type in the full name of the business you're investigating, then hit "Search." All matches appear with different variations of the business name. For example, a search for "McDonald's" yields 170 results. The results page lists the company name, the name they're doing business as (dba), location and location type, such as headquarters. Find the business that best suits your inquiry and click on the business name. Hoover's will provide you with a physical address, phone number and basic financial information. There is no need to buy a report from this site.

Visit Switchboard.com (see Resources). This site is a directory to businesses and people. You can also find directions from your home to the address and review online maps of the area. Type in the business name and the city or state if known. You may also choose a category such as "restaurants," "take out" or "fast food." Switchboard.com will list all of the possible results with address, phone number, website information and ratings of the establishment.

Dial 411 on your phone to find a business address. The phone company is still in the business of assisting customers with inquiries. Provide as much information as possible. For example, instead of saying "Joe's Grill," say "Joe's Grill on 12th Street" or "Joe's Grill in Williamsburg, Virginia." Details help the customer service representative narrow down the options.

Use a paperback phone book to find a business address. This old-fashioned method still works. Most company information that is found online is also found right there in a phone book.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that 411 may cost additional fees from a cell phone. Never buy business reports. They're expensive.
