1
Clean the floor with a cement floor cleaner to remove any heavy-duty stains and prepare the floor for etching. If your floor is smooth, it must be etched. For this you will need an etching product with a 10% muriatic acid solution. Simply clean the floor with the etching solution according to the product instructions. (Each product has a slightly different process.) Always wear goggles and rubber gloves during this step. Rinse the floor with water and let it dry for at least 24 hours.

2
Break your upholstery foam into rough pieces that resemble the shape of flagstones. Pieces should range in size from 2 to 10 inches.

3
Drizzle your paint, preferably three colors, into a large paint pan. You can use shades of gray, shades of pink, or a combination. Swirl the colors together with paint stick, but do not blend them. You want a variation of color.

4
Dip the foam pieces into the paint, then dab them on the newspaper to remove any excess paint. Beginning in a corner, press the foam to the floor to make your flagstone imprints. Alternate different sizes and shapes of foam to vary the pattern. Always use a ¾-inch space between each stamp to give the design a grout line. You can use a foam brush to imprint odd small corners and against walls. Allow your design to dry and cure for several days.

5
Finish the floor by applying a concrete floor wax. There are several mop-on floor wax products you can purchase. Apply two or three coats, allowing drying time the first time you use it. You will need to reapply the wax at least once a year.
