Fold a Handkerchief for a Pants Pocket

According to tiefactory.com, the handkerchief or pocket square started as a religious accessory that priests used at the altar and centuries later was adopted as a fashion statement of the royalty and wealthy. Today, sporting a handkerchief in a suit or dressing jacket's pocket imparts a magic touch that can make any man look elegant, classy and handsome. There are three simple ways in which you can fold a handkerchief or pocket square.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Men's handkerchief

    The Pouf Fold

  1. Step 1

Make a fist with your right hand while you hold the extended handkerchief with your left hand.

  2. Step 2

Place the extended handkerchief over your fist and let it fall. The center of the handkerchief should be right over your fist.

  3. Step 3

Grab loosely the center of the handkerchief and scrunch it lightly.

  4. Step 4

Insert in the suit's pocket in a way that only 1 inch to 1 1/2 inch of the handkerchief shows.

  5. Step 5

Arrange it so it looks attractive.

  6. The Square Fold

  7. Step 1

Lay the handkerchief open and flat over a surface.

  8. Step 2

    Fold the handkerchief in half.

  9. Step 3

    Fold in half again.

  10. Step 4

Fold again so that the top part of the folded handkerchief is longer and the back part is much shorter.

  11. Step 5

    Insert in the suit's pocket.

  12. Step 6

Arrange so the handkerchief is nicely slanted and only 1 inch to an 1 1/2 inch shows.

  13. The Point Fold

  14. Step 1

Lay the handkerchief open on a flat surface.

  15. Step 2

    Fold the handkerchief in half.

  16. Step 3

    Fold in half again.

  17. Step 4

Place the folded handkerchief in a diamond shape with the folded corner pointing toward you.

  18. Step 5

Arrange the top area by moving with your hands so that there are two points (or more if you prefer a three-point or a four-point fold).

  19. Step 6

    Insert in the suit's pocket.

  20. Step 7

Arrange so that only 1 inch to 1 1/2 inch of the handkerchief shows.

Tips & Warnings
  • The point fold works better on linen or cotton handkerchiefs that have been starched. According to tiefactory.com, the pouf fold works better with silk handkerchiefs, and multipointed folds work great with linen or cotton ones.
