How to Create a Universal Packing List

Traveling can be a great deal of fun. It can also be very stressful for an already busy person to have to make all her travel preparations and pack all the necessary items. It is very easy to forget an essential item and to have to purchase the same item at greater expense at an over-priced hotel gift shop. A great way to combat packing forgetfulness is to create a universal packing list to serve as a guide for trip preparation.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a universal packing list on your computer using Microsoft Word. It is a good idea to break down the packing list into categories with bullet points to indicate each item in a specific category. This will help the packer stay organized and easily scan the list.

Start by making a clothing category. Type the word "clothing" and underline it. Create bullet points to list all the clothing someone would need on a trip. You may want to further break down the list into a section for men and one for women, because they have different clothing needs. Clothing you will want to list should include socks, underwear, bra, T-shirts, pants, tops, pajamas and a coat or bathing suit depending on the climate. Add any additional items depending on the specific needs of the individuals you will be handing the lists to. For instance, business men will need to bring suits, ties and dress shoes.

    • 3

Create a toiletries category. Type and underline the word. Items to include in your bullet point list are shampoo and conditioner, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, razor, nail clippers, lotion, perfume or cologne, and makeup and sanitary napkins for women.

    • 4

Make a list for medical items. This could include Band-Aids, antacids, pain reliever, throat drops, eye drops and prescription medications.

    • 5

Include a category for travel items to include plane tickets, passport, license, credit cards, cash, hotel and car rental information and confirmation numbers.

    • 6

Add leisure items to your list. This could include a camera, iPod, laptop, snacks for travel, airplane pillow and gum.

    • 7

Make a section labeled "Other" and leave blank lines beside the bullet points to leave room for the recipient to add other items you may not have thought of.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is a good idea to have several people review your list before you print it to see if you left anything off of it.
