How to Reset a Computer to Defaults

Over time computers accumulate data, software or unwanted viruses that slow the performance, or, in some cases, cause problems in operations. You can always use the System Restore feature to return your computer to a previous state at a particular point, but resetting computer defaults will return it to manufacturer's settings. Here is how to do it.

Instructions

1. Turn your computer off and then back on.

2. Start tapping the F8 key right after you hit the "Power" button to switch it back on. This action will bring up a booting screen.

3. Press the "Down" arrow key on your keyboard until "Repair Your Computer" line is highlighted.

4. Press "Enter" on your keyboard.

5. Click on "Windows Complete PC restore". This action will begin the restoration process.

6. You will be prompted with step-by-step instructions that will guide you through the beginning of process. This part of the restoration will ensure that you actually intend to reset your computer to default settings and did not initiate the process accidentally by asking verification questions. The rest of the reset will be automatic and not requiring your participation.

Tips & Warnings

• The process might take anywhere from two to three hours. Make sure to back up all your data and drivers, so you'll be able to put it back on to your computer after the reset.
