How to Hone a Nissan Sentra Cylinder Wall
Hone the cylinder walls on your Nissan Sentra engine if you plan to install new piston rings. Cylinder honing will break the glaze or the rough surface if you sent the block for cylinder boring. Choose the right honing stone grit for the job according to the piston ring manufacturer. Then follow this procedure to ready the cylinders for engine reassembly.
Things You'll Need
- Engine stand
- Cylinder hone
- Power drill
- Safety goggles
- New 20W motor oil
- Kerosene
- Warm water and soap
- Clean shop rag
- Rust preventive oil
- Large trash plastic bag
Instructions

1
Mount the engine block on an engine stand or use the top of a sturdy workbench and make sure the block is completely clean before you begin.
-
2
Install the main bearing caps on the block and tighten the bolts to the torque recommended for your particular Nissan Sentra model. You can find this information on your vehicle service manual; see the Tip section at the bottom for more information.

3
Install the hone in the power drill and put on your safety goggles. Compress the stones by hand to avoid scratching the cylinder walls and insert the hone into the cylinder.
-
4
Mix equal parts of new 20W motor oil and kerosene in a clean container and use it to lubricate the cylinder wall you will be honing first. Keep the cylinder well lubricated as you hone the cylinder.
-
5
Turn on the drill and keep it at a low speed while always moving the drill up and down. Your goal is to produce a crosshatch pattern on the cylinder wall with the lines crossing at an angle close to 60 degrees. Make sure to keep the cylinder wall well lubricated
-
6
Keep the hone moving up and down. When you are finished or want to stop to lubricate the cylinder wall, release the drill switch but keep the hone moving until the drill comes to a complete stop; then compress the hone with your hand and withdraw the hone.
-
7
Move on to the next cylinder, following steps 4 through 6 until you hone all the cylinders; then wash the entire engine block using warm water and soap to remove all the grit produced during the honing process. Dampen a clean shop rag with clean motor oil and wipe the cylinder walls with the rag. When there's no gray residue left on the rag, the cylinder walls are cleaned.
-
8
Let the engine block dry completely, apply a coat of rust preventive oil to the block and wrap it in a large, trash plastic bag to keep dirt off the block and ready for assembly.
