Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Vista operating system
  • Audio files
  • Video files
  • Recent updates
  1. Step 1

Open the Windows Media Player application. This can be done by clicking the desktop icon or going through the Start menu and selecting the "All Programs" link. Once it has fully opened, you can manually check to see if there are any updates available for it.

  2. Step 2

View the menu options listed at the top of the Windows Media Player application. If you don't instantly see any menu options, right-click an empty space on the taskbar. Click the "Show Classic Menu" link to make it appear. From the displayed list, choose the "Help" link to gain access to more information about the program. A drop-down list will quickly appear with additional options to choose from.

  3. Step 3

Use a high-speed Internet connection to search for current updates because it will allow you to download necessary files quickly. Click the "Check for Updates" link and Windows Media Player will begin to look for the latest updates for the program. Depending on your Internet connection, it usually takes a few seconds to inform you of any available updates. Follow the on-screen prompts to download them.

  4. Step 4

Create a regular schedule for updating Windows Media Player without having to do it manually. To get started with this option, place your cursor over the "Now Playing" tab listed at the top of the application. Once you see the small arrow pointing downward, click it.

  5. Step 5

Browse through the drop-down list to see what's there. Choose the "More Options" link to open another list of choices. When the "Options" box appears, there will be several tabs you can navigate through. These settings allow you to change the look and feel of your Windows Media Player in a few clicks.

  6. Step 6

Select the "Player" tab to customize the update schedule. In the first section under "Automatic Updates," pick one of the presented options: scheduled updates on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. After picking one, click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the window to make the changes. When you're finished, press the "OK" button to complete everything and close the box.
