Connect a multifunction printer with a scanning feature to your Windows Vista computer system. This can usually be done via a WiFi connection or a USB cable. If you're going to use the built-in WiFi option, also make sure that the printer has been previously added to your network. View the accompanying user guide for the steps to do so. Using a USB cable only involves following the setup guide and connecting it from the printer to your computer's USB port. This port can be identified by the standard USB symbol or by looking at its picture in the user guide.

Position your document on the scanner portion of your multifunction printer. There will be guide marks to direct you to its correct position. Not placing your documents in this section will cause them to be incorrectly scanned and possibly cut off from view. If your printer has an automatic document feeder, consider placing as many as 10 pages in this section to make scanning much easier.

Click the "Start" button at the lower left corner of your Vista computer screen. More options will be available for you to view. Click the "All Programs" link and browse through the displayed choices. To access the Vista scanning function, click the "Windows Fax and Scan" link.

    • 4

Place your cursor on the toolbar at the top of the page. To begin the scanning process, choose the "New Scan" option. A pop-up box will immediately appear with more options to choose from. Select the "Profile" list and pick the "Documents" option to continue. You'll be instantly presented with the default scanning settings. If you'd rather customize them according to your personal preferences, do so at this point.

    • 5

Click the "Preview" link to view your scanned images before closing the application. This will allow you to make last-minute changes if needed. Select the "Scan" option after completing the scan process. Within a few seconds, the "Windows Fax and Scan" function will automatically present you with the finished product for you to view. Save the scanned documents or items to your computer and view them again at a later time.
