Instructions

    • 1

Make a poncho by cutting out a 5-foot square of brown velour cloth. Cut slits 1/2-inch apart and 4 inches deep around the whole square. Cut out a 12-inch circle from the middle of the square. Glue or sew on decorative trim and beads around the neck opening. Wear a simple t-shirt underneath.

    • 2

Design a headband by using the same trim as used on the poncho to reach around your forehead. For an extra authentic look, you can staple some feathers into the band on the inside. Tie it together in the back and let the extra hang down. Braid long hair into two braids at the side of your face.

    • 3

Wear any kind of brown pants and glue on a fringe of the brown velour that is about 4 inches wide with 3-inch cuts every 1/2-inch down the side seam. Everything should have a loose and hanging look. Nothing should be snug or tight.

    • 4

Make a belt either for pants or for a skirt. Since they did not use zippers or buttons to close their clothing, wrap the cloth belt over the waistline. This can be a 6-inch wide piece of cloth that is about 6 feet long. Knot it and let it hang at your waist.

    • 5

Construct an authentic skirt with any tan or brown plain skirt that comes to about knee level or below. Cut 3-inch fringes in the hem about 1/2-inch apart all around the bottom. Add a decoration of trim down the side seam with fabric glue.

    • 6

Wear some brown or tan dancers leggings over the ankles and some slippers or moccasins for the feet. Anywhere you can add some beads will help make the costume look more authentic.

    • 7

Accessorize with beaded necklaces and bracelets, even in your hair and around your ankles.
