Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Towel
  • Masking tape
  • Masking paper
  • Grey scuff pad (found at automotive paint store)
  • Car wash soap
  • Water
  • Sponge
  • Primer for vinyl (found at automotive store)
  • Paint for vinyl (found at automotive store)
  1. Step 1

Remove interior parts that will be painted, if possible. If the parts cannot be removed, use masking tape and paper to cover surrounding areas. Use an old sheet to cover the seats.

  2. Step 2

Wash the parts that will be painted. Scrub them with soap, water and a grey scuffing pad. This removes dirt, dust and any protective cleaner used in the past. Cleaners like Armor All cause paint to peel and flake. The soap and scuff pad scrubs the cleaners off, leaving a dull surface. Make sure all of the surface to be painted is dull and not shiny. Repeat the washing and scrubbing as many times as necessary. Allow the area to dry completely.

  3. Step 3

Apply three or four coats of primer using light, even strokes. The primer covers any small scratches or imperfections and allows to paint to adhere better to the part. Allow the primer to dry completely between coats.

  4. Step 4

Spray four or five coats of paint using light, even strokes. The paint is thin and watery, so use very light strokes to prevent runs in the paint. Using multiple light coats yields a much better result than using fewer heavy coats. Allow each coat to dry before applying a new coat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Painting interior parts in warm, dry weather will result in better bonding of the paint. Painting in wet or cold weather can cause the paint to not dry completely.
  • Do not spray paint or primer without wearing a face mask. Keep all of the doors open for proper ventilation, even while wearing a face mask. Don't use shiny finish paints on areas like the dashboard. Lights and the sun shine on these areas and can cause bright spots which can blur the vision of the driver.
