Whether you're remodeling or hanging a heavy painting, a stud finder is an invaluable tool. While there are fancy laser models available, if you're only going to use your stud finder once in a while, a manual model will work perfectly for miscellaneous jobs. Available in home improvement and hardware stores, once you get the hang of using a stud finder you'll never want to pound another nail without it.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Insert the batteries into the stud finder as directed by the manufacturer.

  2. Step 2

Turn on the stud finder and hold it flat against the wall; the lights will flash and you'll hear a series of beeps while the stud finder calibrates and measures the thickness of your wall.

  3. Step 3

Hold the stud finder at the level in which you plan to place your nail or other fastener, and with the stud finder flat against the wall, depress the activator button and move it slowly to the right in a horizontal line.

  4. Step 4

Watch the sensor lights and listen for it to beep. When the red lights goes green, it has found the outside edge of the stud. Mark this spot lightly with a pencil.

  5. Step 5

Place the stud finder 10 inches to the right and repeat the process. This time move to the left, towards the mark you just made. When you see and hear the sensors, you have reached the opposite side of the stud. Mark this spot too; you will have approximately 1 and 3/4 inches between the marks. This is the thickness of the stud and where you can securely pound in your nail.
