Change Oil on a Honda Lawn Mower

Changing oil in Honda lawn mowers will prolong the life of your mower and keep it running efficiently. Honda recommends changing oil after every 25 hours of use. This simple procedure can be performed without tools in less than 15 minutes and requires minimum skill and effort, but it will pay dividends in the life and performance of your lawn mower.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • 1 drain pan with 2-qt. capacity
    • 1 qt. of 30-weight oil
    • 1 clean rag
    • 1 small funnel 6 inches in diameter
      • 1

Run your lawn mower for a minimum of five minutes prior to draining the oil (to warm the oil).

      • 2

Remove the oil dipstick and wipe it free of oil.

      • 3

Position the drain pan on a level surface adjacent to the side of the mower housing the dipstick tube.

      • 4

Lift and tilt the lawnmower on the side opposite the dipstick. Leave two wheels on the side of the dipstick tube on the ground while raising the two opposite side wheels until the deck of the mower is perpendicular to the ground.

      • 5

Ensure that the top of the dipstick tube is centered over the drain pan, and continue to raise the opposite side of the mower until oil flows freely from the dipstick tube.
Allow the oil to drain from the tube into the drain pan until oil no longer flows from the tube.

      • 6

Lower the mower to its upright position, and add ½ qt. of 30-weight oil into the dipstick tube. Wipe the dipstick clean, and insert the dipstick into the tube to the fully seated position. Remove the dipstick and check the oil level. Add additional oil if necessary to reach the "full" mark on the dipstick.

      • 7

        Replace the dipstick.

      • 8

Insert the 6-inch funnel into the empty oil bottle, and drain the used oil from the drain pan into the bottle. Cap the bottle containing the used oil, and take it to an oil recycling center for disposal.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Warming the oil by running the engine prior to draining the oil increases and facilitates the oil flow.

    • Honda mowers vary in engine size. Larger (or smaller) engines may require a different quantity of oil than that stated in Step 7. Check your owner's manual for the correct amount. Avoid contact with hot oil removed from mower.
