1
Think about building a small house. Large, extravagant houses need more energy to heat and more materials to build.
-
2
Use local materials. Shipping materials long distances uses energy, but buying local removes the middle energy costs.
-
-
3
Make sure the local materials do not damage the environment when they are extracted, like sand, rocks or adobe.
-
4
Use materials that are quickly replenished in the environment. Trees are a valuable resource, because they filter carbon dioxide out of the air. A more viable material is bamboo. Bamboo regrows quickly in nature and is a durable material for laying floors.
-
5
Use recycled materials. Rather than taking new resources from the earth, reuse old materials. Many local stores sell recycled materials, including plumbing, wood, doors and electrical supplies. They also cost a fraction of the price.
