How to Remove a Hard Drive From an iBook

While all computers differ from model to model as to how to remove a hard drive, most removal procedures are straight forward and require only the removal of a few screws and a back cover. However, the iBook is an older laptop model from Apple and poses a greater removal challenge. With a few key tools and a knowledge of screw and cover placement, though, you can still remove your iBook's hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut down all power to your iBook. Unplug the AC adapter if it is plugged in. Flip the unpowered iBook over on a flat surface, so that the bottom side is facing upward.

    • 2

Locate and remove the screws. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to do so. There are five screws on the bottom to remove, as well as three Allen screws. Remove all of them.

    • 3

Remove the CD drive. To do so, open the CD drive cover. Upon doing so, you will find five more screws inside. Remove these screws from inside the drive with your screwdriver.

    • 4

Open the battery compartment, which is on the back of the computer. It has a distinguishing outline. Once the battery cover is off, you will see the battery connector. Directly next to the battery connector are two more screws. Remove both.

    • 5

Remove the bottom cover of your iBook. Begin to do so at the open battery compartment and work carefully. Make sure not to tug at the top lid, which could cause damage to your iBook.

    • 6

Locate the Sleep LED (sleep indicator light), which is on the bottom of the unit and next to the latch of the iBook. There are several small screws to remove here in the same fashion as before. There is also a longer screw here that keeps the top lid on. Remove it.

Remove the six screws surrounding the keyboard area of the top of the iBook. Then, locate the horizontal plate just above the keyboard. Remove the two screws on this plate. Lift up the now free keyboard and unplug the keyboard connector just below it. This cable runs from the base of the machine to the back of the keyboard.

    • 8

Remove the top cover of the iBook altogether. To do so, grab the back right and back left corners of the cover and slowly work your way forward to remove the cover.

    • 9

Unplug the ribbon cable. This cable will be listed as "To Main Board." Then unplug the wire at the front left corner, which is right beside the hard drive. Make sure it no longer holds the hard drive in place, and carefully lift out the hard drive.

Take off the metal brackets from the hard drive by locating the four small screws holding it in place and then removing them all with a Torx screwdriver. Then, just pop off the metal tape shield. The hard drive has been removed successfully.
