How to Make Switch Plate Covers

Making your own custom switch plate covers is a fun way to freshen up your living space without breaking the bank. You can be as creative as you want to be, without spending money on designer switch plates, and you can easily match your switch plates to any border or wallpaper or make one-of-a-kind switch plates with interesting fabrics.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wallpaper or fabric
  • Switch plate
  • X-acto knife
  • Small Phillips screwdriver
  • Scissors
  • Adhesive
  • Tape
  1. Step 1

    Lay the switch plate over the wallpaper or fabric.

  2. Step 2

    Using the X-Acto knife or scissors, cut the wallpaper or fabric about ½ inch larger than the switch plate.

  3. Step 3

    Spray or brush adhesive on the back of the wallpaper or fabric.

  4. Step 4

    Place the wallpaper or fabric over the switch plate and smooth. Allow it to dry.

  5. Step 5

    Fold the excess wallpaper or fabric to the back of the switch plate and tape it in place.

  6. Step 6

    With an X-Acto knife, cut an X in the fabric where the switch hole is located. Fold the edges back through the switch hole and tape them to the back of the switch plate.

  7. Step 7

    Punch the screw holes with a small Philips screwdriver.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be creative using magazine photos or paint. Apply a sealant to the final product.
