How to use a Baitcast Reel
Baitcast reels are used in conjunction with bait casting rods. These set ups are used by fishermen to catch a wide variety of both fresh and saltwater fish species. Baitcast reels are spooled with mono-filament or fluorocarbon line and are used with such baits as live minnows, soft plastics, plugs, spoons and jigs. Baitcasting reels are easily mastered and may be used by a wide range of individuals.

How to use a Baitcast Reel
-
1
Hold the reel by grasping the reel in the palm of the hand. The fingers will be wrapped around the handle of the rod. The thumb is rested on the large button of the reel and reel spool.
-
2
Put tension on the spool with the thumb and press the large button at the back of the reel. This will disengage the spooling mechanism and allow the spool to move freely and release line.
-
-
3
Bring the rod back to the side and then quickly forward toward the target in the water. A small looping motion to the side will generate sufficient momentum to propel the lure or bait forward.
-
4
Release the line with the thumb to allow the bait to move toward the target. Make sure to keep some contact with the line on the spool with the thumb. As the bait or lure hits the water, apply more pressure to prevent the line from over running and forming a knot.
-
5
Turn the handle of the reel to re-engage the spooling mechanism and continue turning to retrieve the lure or bait. Repeat the steps to cast the bait or lure to another spot on the water.
