How to Ride a Dirt Bike With Gears

Dirt bikes are off-road vehicles that can drive through a variety of terrain. Riding dirt bikes takes skill, practice and firsthand knowledge of how the bike handles in certain conditions. Some dirt bikes have a single gear and all you need to do is turn the throttle in order to ride them, but the majority of bikes have multiple gears and are a bit more complicated to ride. Luckily, learning to ride a dirt bike with gears is made easier by having a bit of knowledge about the bike's operation first.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the clutch (left-hand lever on the handlebars) all the way back and hold it. Start the bike either with the kick starter or the electrical starter.

    • 2

Press downward on the left shifter arm with your left foot. Roll the throttle back a bit and let the clutch out slowly and smoothly until the bike begins to roll forward.

    • 3

Continue riding at a good pace and then pull the clutch in, lift up on the shifter arm with your left foot and then let the clutch back out while still coasting. Continue in this method until your top gear is reached. When you want to downshift, press down on the shifting lever until you are in first gear, then lift up slightly to put the bike in neutral.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always wear a helmet and protective clothing. Never wear loose clothing that could get caught in the chain of the bike.
