Learn how to paint oil portraits, and your work will be extraordinary. Portraits are among the most challenging types of paintings. You have to capture not only the looks, but the personality of your subject. It helps to have oil painting experience. Here's how to paint oil portraits:

  1. Step 1

    Choose the size of canvas you'd like to use. Coat it with gesso twice, sanding each layer after it has time to dry. Then choose the clothes your subject will wear. After considering the subject's personality and where the painting will be hung, decide which colors will be included in the portrait.

  2. Step 2

    Lightly sketch the outline with pencil (graphite) or charcoal. Make sure all of the features are placed correctly before you start painting. When you're ready, begin coloring the eyes with your oils. Work your way outward from the pupils. The face should be completely painted before you continue.

  3. Step 3

    Paint the background before you add hair, which will look more natural painted last. The lighter side of the face should be contrasted by the darker side of the background, and vice versa. Let your work dry before you add hair, facial highlights, and shadows for contrast. Paint the clothes last.
