Times are tough for traditional dial-up connections. The barrage of Internet advertisements and constant video streams can overwhelm a poor 56k modem. There is hope, however: By taking a few small measures to maximize your bandwidth potential, you can make your Internet surfing a much more enjoyable experience.

Instructions

Disable images on your Web browser. If you are surfing the Web for text and not pictures, this is a no-brainer. It only takes a second to do, and it saves a lot of time. Even if you need to see the occasional picture, you can always right-click on the empty box where it belongs and select "Show Picture." To disable images follow the instructions at: http://malektips.com/internet_explorer_7_0022.html

Use Firefox as your default Web browser. This browser requires a lot less RAM and functions far more efficiently than many other popular browsers. It requires a download, but if you have the patience, it is well worth the effort. (See Resources.)

Download a "tweaking" program that will guide you through the process of adjusting some of your browser settings, depending on the type of browser you use and the modem you have. Follow the link in Resources, select the browser you use and then click "Download." Once you have the program, simply open it and follow the on-screen prompts to adjust the settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Another, more difficult way to speed up your dial-up connection involves adjusting your computer's MTUs. This is not recommended for the computer novice, but if you want to give it a try, you can find instructions by following the final link in Resources.
