Ensure that you meet the criteria. In order to become a National Board Certified teacher, you must meet certain criteria, including:
- Having obtained a bachelor's degree.
- Have completed three years of teaching or counseling.
- Hold a valid teaching or counseling license in your state for the three full years and currently. If your state doesn't require a license you must have taught in schools that are cleared to operate by your state. -

Fill out the forms. You will need to provide certain documents or access to information for your claims, experience, education and other facts to be checked. You will also have to sign a document stating that every bit of information on the application is true to the best of your knowledge. Double-check to ensure that all the information you have stated is correct and that you have made no mistakes, grammatical errors or typos. Know that the teaching institutions you've worked for will most likely be contacted to ensure your claims. You will mail your forms to:

Pay for the certification. The certification will typically cost you about $2,565. You will start with a $65 application fee to send in your application. This should be sent with the forms above. You'll also need to pay a $500 initial assessment fee and a final assessment fee of $2,000.

Apply for certification. Once you have made sure that you're completely eligible and that you meet all the requirements and that you understand the processes, you can apply.
