How to Ship a Firearm With UPS

Firearms can be shipped via UPS as long as proper procedures are followed. In order to ship a firearm via UPS, both the shipper and receiver must be either: licensed to import/export, licensed dealers/manufacturers, law enforcement officials/agencies within the United States, or collectors with a valid license to possess firearms. Individuals within the United States that are not prohibited to possess firearms may also ship to valid, authorized individuals as long as they comply with state and local laws as well as packaging requirements. Firearms that fall in the category of automatic weapons are not permitted to ship via UPS. Additionally, UPS does not permit firearms to be shipped internationally.

Instructions

    • 1

Package ammunition separately. Ammunition cannot be shipped via UPS in the same container as a firearm.

    • 2

Secure the firearm in protective packaging. Inexpensive hard cases are recommended, but not required.

    • 3

Place the firearm in an appropriate-sized box.

    • 4

Tape all open seams with packaging/shipping tape.

    • 5

Complete a UPS shipping label with ship to address and return address.

    • 6

Mark the package for "Delivery Confirmation/Adult Signature Required" service.

    • 7

Mark the package for any available UPS Next Day Air Services. UPS will ship firearms via Next Day Air services only, unless it is not offered. In this case, the next highest priority shipping method must be used.

    • 8

Take the package to any place that holds a UPS Daily Pickup Account or to a UPS Customer Service Center.

    • 9

Separate the package containing the firearm from any other shipments.

    • 10

Notify the UPS driver or UPS customer service representative verbally that the package contains a firearm.

Tips & Warnings

  • Firearm packages shipped UPS are not allowed to use UPS Returns Service.

Step 8 above is not totally correct. Not just anyone with a daily UPS pickup can ship firearms (or ammunition, or gun parts) Our locations of The UPS Store, as independent franchises, are forbidden under the terms of our contracts with UPS to ship those items. Only the UPS Customer Service Centers can do so, to appropriately licensed dealers.
