Instead of Velcro or typical snaps, a magnetic snap adds a closure that's easy to use. You can use magnetic snaps on bags, purses, backpacks, and totes. Once you learn how to sew on a magnetic snap and you see how easy it is, you may want a magnetic snap on many different items.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing notions (thread, scissors)
  • Fabric pen
  • Seam ripper
  • Interfacing
  • Iron
  1. Step 1

Determine the position for both sides of the magnetic snap on the item. Make a small mark in the center of each spot with the fabric pen.

  2. Step 2

Cut two 2-by-2 inch squares of interfacing.

  3. Step 3

Iron each square of interfacing onto the wrong side of the fabric where each side of the magnetic snap will be placed to add stability to the fabric.

  4. Step 4

Place the center hole of the washer from the magnetic snap onto one of the marks you made in Step 1. Mark a line in each of the slits above and below the center hole with the fabric pen to mark where you need to cut holes in the fabric.

  5. Step 5

Sew a buttonhole around each line made in Step 4 with your sewing machine.

  6. Step 6

Use the seam ripper to carefully make slits in each buttonhole.

  7. Step 7

Place the magnetic snap on the underside of the fabric and insert the prongs of the magnetic snap through each buttonholed slit.

  8. Step 8

Position the washer on the right side of the fabric over the prongs of the magnetic snap. The fabric will be sandwiched between the magnetic snap and the washer.

  9. Step 9

Bend each prong toward the center of the magnetic snap. They must be bent until they're flat against the magnetic snap.

  10. Step 10

Repeat Steps 4 through 9 with the other side of the magnetic snap on the other side of the fabric.
