Flat irons will naturally develop some dirt and residue after each use, especially if you use straightening products in your hair before ironing. If this residue is not removed, it can snag or tear your hair and cause hair damage and breakage. The best way to clean the ceramic plates on flat irons is to purchase a spray cleaner designed specifically for them. These products are available in most drugstores or beauty-supply stores, and they effectively remove residue without damaging the delicate ceramic plates. The cleaners are easy to use and will keep your ceramic flat iron working like new.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Towels
  • Flat iron cleaner
  • Old toothbrush (if applicable)
  1. Step 1

Unplug your flat iron and allow it to cool for at least 10 minutes.

  2. Step 2

Wipe the ceramic plates with a soft, damp towel.

  3. Step 3

Spray a small amount of a flat-iron cleaner, such as Hot Tools Styling Iron Cleaner or Hana Styling Iron Cleaner, directly onto the ceramic plates of your iron.

  4. Step 4

Leave the flat iron on the counter and let the cleaner sit for 10 minutes while it dissolves the styling residue.

  5. Step 5

Remove the cleaner by wiping the ceramic plates with another clean, damp towel.

  6. Step 6

Repeat this process after each use of your flat iron to prevent residue from forming and damaging your hair. Allow the ceramic plates to dry completely before you use the iron again.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the residue is not easily removed after you follow these steps, repeat the process and use an old toothbrush to gently scrub the ceramic plates after Step 4.
  • Never use harsh chemicals or scrubs on your ceramic flat-iron plates. They are delicate and can be damaged easily by common household products like bleach or bathroom cleanser. Using a flat-iron cleaner will extend the life of your ceramic plates and keep your hair healthy and shiny.
