Sew a Button

From time to time, buttons become loose and fall off of shirts. If you have a favorite shirt that is missing a button, don't despair and don't throw it away. Find a replacement button and learn how to sew a shirt button back on your shirt so that you can continue to wear your shirt. It is not difficult--in fact even a person with the most novice sewing skills can successfully sew on a shirt button.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cut a 10-inch length of thread and thread the needle. Pull the thread through so that the needle is at the halfway point of the length of thread and tie an overhand knot in the ends of the thread.

  2. Step 2

Insert the needle into the shirt from the underside at the point where the button will be sewn on. Pull the needle through until the knot at the end of the thread stops it.

  3. Step 3

Insert the needle through a hole of the button and position the button onto the shirt where it will be sewn.

  4. Step 4

Insert the needle back down through the hole of the button that is opposite to the hole you came up through and then through to the underside of the shirt.

  5. Step 5

Insert the needle back up through the hole you came up in Step 4 and pull the thread all the way through.

  6. Step 6

Repeat steps 5 and 6 at least four more times to make sure the button is sewn securely. Finish with the needle on the underside of the shirt.

  7. Step 7

Insert up through a third hole of the button if the button has four holes. Repeat steps 5 and 6 again at least four times to sew the third and fourth holes of the button, if necessary.

  8. Step 8

Tie an overhand knot in the thread right at the point where the thread comes through to the underside of the shirt under the button. Clip off the excess thread to finish sewing the button to the shirt.

Tips & Warnings
  • Shirts will often have spare buttons sewn into the lower inside edge for replacing lost buttons.
