How to Use a Computer as a Police Scanner

A cheap alternative to purchasing a police scanner is to turn your computer into a scanner. All you need is Internet access and updated Windows software. Many websites stream local police scanners through a Windows media player. Scan America is just one of numerous free websites where you can listen to local emergency and law enforcement radio.

Instructions

1. Search for "free internet police scanner" online, or go to the Scan America website (see Resources).

2. Choose a broadcast by location. If you're using the Scan America website, select the state and county where the broadcast is located.

3. Choose the type of broadcast. Options include police, fire and emergency medical service vehicle broadcasts.

4. If you can't hear the broadcast, update your Windows media player. Right click on the player, select "Help" and then "Check for Updates."
