A cheap alternative to purchasing a police scanner is to turn your computer into a scanner. All you need is Internet access and updated Windows software. Many websites stream local police scanners through a Windows media player. Scan America is just one of numerous free websites where you can listen to local emergency and law enforcement radio.

Instructions

    • 1

Search for "free internet police scanner" online, or go to the Scan America website (see Resources).

    • 2

Choose a broadcast by location. If you're using the Scan America website, select the state and county where the broadcast is located.

    • 3

Choose the type of broadcast. Options include police, fire and emergency medical service vehicle broadcasts.

    • 4

If you can't hear the broadcast, update your Windows media player. Right click on the player, select "Help" and then "Check for Updates."

Tips & Warnings

  • Only broadcasts from major cities are available online.
