How to Flip Hair With a Flat Iron
If you have a mid-size flat iron and have been wondering whether you can use it to create multiple hairstyles, you can. Aside from straightening or curling the hair, your flat iron can help you recreate the classic "flip" hairstyle. It was popular with both housewives and pin-up beauties in the 1950s. Even though the hairstyle is commonly worn by those with bobs or shoulder-length hair, feel free to flip the ends of longer or layered hair with a flat iron to make the style your own. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Mid-size flat iron
- Comb
- Thermal styling protectant
- Professional hairdresser's clips
- Hairspray
Instructions
-
-
1
Turn on your flat iron and allow it to heat up.
-
2
Comb your hair to remove any tangles that will get in the way of creating a smooth flip hairstyle.
-
-
3
Spray your hair with thermal-styling protectant to shield it from potential damage from the intense heat of the flat iron. Make especially sure that the ends of your hair are coated with the product to prevent split ends.
-
4
Section off your hair with professional hairdressing clips to give you easier access to the lock of hair you are currently working on. Each section should be about 1/4 to 1-inch wide for the most effective hairstyling.
-
5
Begin with the sections of hair at the nape of your neck, moving upward in sections. Once you are finished with a section, there is no need to clip it back up with the rest of your hair.
-
6
Clamp the flat iron down as close as you can to the roots on the section of hair. Getting close to the roots is important if you have very frizzy hair so you can eliminate all signs of frizz, but be careful not to burn your scalp.
-
7
Slide the flat iron down the lock of hair in one fluid motion. You may have to repeat this two or three times to smooth it down to your satisfaction. When you get to the last inch on the lock of hair each time you slide the flat iron down, twist your wrist up and out to flip the ends of your hair.
-
8
Create a flip with each section of hair, slowly working your way to the crown of your head.
-
9
Mist hair lightly with hairspray to hold your style in place.

Tips & Warnings
You may use a mini flat iron on short hair for greater styling precision. Your locks do not have to be in a one-length haircut for you to be able to create a flip style. Layered hair can also be flipped at the ends for a stylized take on the hairstyle.
Minimize hair damage by investing in a ceramic or tourmaline flat iron if you will be using thermal hairstyling tools on a regular basis. Stay away from copper or metal-plated flat irons to keep your hair as healthy and shiny as possible.
