How to Make a Security System With My Computer
Turning a computer into a security system eliminates the high-cost investment that a commercial CCTV requires. You don't need a lot of money to accomplish these results, and you probably own most of the equipment already. With a standard USB camera, a little ingenuity and the right software, a custom-built CCTV can be configured to suit your individual requirements.
Motion detection and online video streaming is also possible by using advanced software. Below you will find step-by-step instructions on how to take your computer and turn it into a home security system to protect you and your family from intruders and unwanted guests.

1
Record CCTV direct feeds on your computer generated by the wireless webcams. Place them strategically around the outside perimeter of your home, and then send a feed to the computer from which you will be performing surveillance.
-
2
Link the cameras to a broadband Internet connection for online viewing. You should also find a secure location for the computer so that it is not stolen or destroyed by an intruder.
-
-
3
Mount a USB video camera or cameras if the software supports multiple cameras. If you are using multiple cameras, then you need a USB hub at the end of the USB cord to split the signals.
-
4
Place the cameras 5 meters away from the computer using USB extension cables. If the distance is more than that, then you will require a USB signal booster to ensure a good-quality video image.
-
5
Make sure there is enough space on your computer's hard drive for it to be able to record videos. If not, you have the option of purchasing an external hard drive and saving the daily feeds to this drive to save space on the internal hard drive.
-
6
Install surveillance software on your computer. You can buy Digi-watcher webcam security package or use a free or open-source solution such as Dorgem project. Choosing the software also depends on how many cameras you want to install; whether you need remote access from another computer at any given time; or if you need time scheduling functioning, motion-detection features and/or nonstop video footage.

Tips & Warnings
While selecting the webcam check to see if it records in high definition, is weatherproof, has wireless functionality and can see in the dark. If you need to record a lot of videos then you can use an external hard drive, as mentioned above, as well as CD or DVD as a backup for your video recordings. You can also buy a battery backup system so that the CCTV continues working even when there is no power. Normal webcams should not be used outside for surveillance since rain and extreme temperatures can destroy your webcam. Laptops shouldn't be used for surveillance, either, since they are not designed to run for a long period of time.
