How to Setup a Home Network in Vista

Setting up a home network allows you to access multiple computers through one system. This network can be used to share and transfer files and data, such as documents, music files and videos. Network users also have access to peripheral equipment, such as printers and scanners. Setting up a home network on Vista is fast and easy using the Vista Network Set-Up Wizard.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Turn on all of the computers that will be part of the home network.

  2. Step 2

    Log into the computer that you will use as the main or host system. Make sure that you are logged in as the administrator.

  3. Step 3

    Click "Start," "Control Panel," "Network" and "Internet Connections." Open the "Network Set-Up Wizard."

  4. Step 4

    Indicate whether the computer you are on is connected to the Internet through a modem or a router. Click "Next." Click on the computer's Internet connection and click "Next."

  5. Step 5

    Create a name for the computer you are using and click "Next." Create a name for the network and click "Next."

  6. Step 6

    Check "Turn on File and Printer Sharing" and click "Next."

  7. Step 7

    Check "Just Finish the Wizard" and click "Next."

  8. Step 8

    Click "Finish" and "Yes" to restart the computer. After the computer has restarted, your home network is up and ready to use.
