Use a shielded guitar chord and an adapter that takes the 1/4-inch jack down to a 1/8-inch jack so you can plug the guitar cord into your laptop computer's Microphone input. On a desktop computer, you can use either the Microphone input or the Line in input. The Microphone input lets you use the Microphone Boost setting in the advanced sound menu for a louder guitar sound.

  2. Step 2

Open the Sound Recorder program from the Start menu. This is a basic program that Microsoft uses in all versions of Windows. It is usually tucked in the Accessories tree.

  3. Step 3

Check your advanced sound options settings to ensure that the microphone is not muted on either the playback or the recording sound.

  4. Step 4

Play your guitar and adjust the levels so the sound is not distorted. When you are satisfied with the sound, press Record and play your inspired song. When you are finished, click Stop. Click Play to listen to your excellent guitar riff progression.
