For many deer hunters, one of the most thrilling parts of the hunt is the potential for shooting a deer that sports a nice set of antlers. Oftentimes, hunters who shoot what they consider a nice-sized deer want to put the antlers on the wall. While some hunters want to mount the entire deer head, many just want the antlers, which they can use for decoration or to make a rattle call for deer. No matter how they want to use them, they must know how to cut deer antlers.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bone saw
  1. Step 1

Walk up to the dead animal and grab its antlers with your non-dominant hand.

  2. Step 2

Hold the antlers tightly in your hand. Make sure the opposite end of the antlers is not on the ground, since putting pressure on the antlers could cause them to break.

  3. Step 3

Cut the antlers as close to the head as possible with a bone saw. If you want the two sides of the antlers to remain connected, and the burr that connects the antlers to the head is thick enough, cut through the burr.

  4. Step 4

Use long cutting strokes. This will result in the smoothest cut.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to clean your bone saw after use.
  • Be careful anytime you use cutting instruments. Make sure you have the proper licenses to harvest deer.
