Using a gas smoker is great for all occasions. You can use either a propane or natural gas smoker. Using a clean burning fuel provides you with great tasting food along with easy cleanup. Even the most inexperienced of chefs can use a gas smoker with ease. Smokers have a compact size and make it easy to keep the temperature regulated. If you need a portable smoker, then choose the propane type as propane has about twice the energy potential as natural gas. However, natural gas smokers are great for a homeowner who can hook it up to the natural gas supply of the home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gas smoker (propane or natural gas)
  • Your choice of smoking chips (hickory, mesquite or apple wood)
  • Your favorite meat
  • Food thermometer
  1. Step 1

Find the smoker's water pan in the bottom of the smoker and add the water to it. There should be a fill line on the water pan.

  2. Step 2

Ignite your smoker. There will be an ignition button you should push. It should light on the first or second push. If it does not light, check your gas source.

  3. Step 3

Set the smoker temperature to 225 degrees Fahrenheit. This is an ideal temperature for slow smoking.

  4. Step 4

Pick your favorite meat. You should have already selected your meat and have the meat prepared for cooking. Some people like to marinate or use a rub. Place your meat in the smoker and smoke for generally three to four hours. The cooking time will vary on how many pounds of meat you are smoking.

  5. Step 5

Use an internal thermometer to check your meat. The internal temperature will vary with the type of meat you are cooking. However, to make your meat rare, the internal temperature should be around 160-165 degrees Fahrenheit.

  6. Step 6

Turn your smoker off. Turn the dial to the off position and let cool before cleaning.
Cleaning your smoker is simple. Remove the racks and wash with warm soapy water. Take the water pan out and dump the water. It will be filled with ash as well from your wood. Rinse and dry the water pan well to prevent rusting.

Tips & Warnings
  • When using a smoker, there is always the question of "Is it ready to eat yet?" Use a thermometer to end those questions. To use the thermometer just put it in the thickest part of the meat. Temperatures will vary for the type of meat you are cooking.
  • When cooking with gas, there is always the chance of leaks. Make sure all your hoses are in good shape and keep up the maintenance of your smoker.
