Skype makes it easy to install its software on computers running Linux. It offers installation packages for at least seven different Linux distributions. Installation is possible with only a few clicks.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Navigate to Skype.com com and click "Download." On the following page, select the installation package for the Linux distribution that most closely resembles your operating system and click to begin downloading.
If the Web site does not recognize that you are running Linux and begins downloading an installer for a different operating system, select "Linux" from the right-hand column.

  2. Step 2

Open the Skype installation file by double-clicking on the file, then complete the installation process by following the directions that pop up on your operating system's installation program (for example, Package Installer in Ubuntu). Download any files your installation process recommends in the process.

  3. Step 3

Search for and install the following packages, which are required to run Skype, if the installer did not do so automatically:
    Qt 4.2.1+
    D-Bus 1.0.0
    libasound2 1.0.12
Installation methods may vary among Linux distributions.

  4. Step 4

Open the Skype application, and log in to begin making calls.
