Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Visit a garden center, preferably one that sells organic herb seeds and seedlings. Suitable indoor herbs include basil, bay, oregano and sage. See Resources for the top 10 picks for indoor herbs. Seedlings save time, since you do not have to wait for seeds to sprout.

  2. Step 2

Select containers that have have adequate drainage. You can purchase new pots or use what you have around the house. Lay a few small stones or gravel on the bottom of the pots to promote healthy drainage.

  3. Step 3

Blend equal parts potting soil with sand and peat moss to provide the best soil environment for your herbs. Place a small amount of soil blend into the pot. Carefully place the seedling into the soil, arranging more soil around the roots. Allow the seedling to pop up above the soil. Leave about 1 inch of empty pot at the top. Gently pat down the soil. Water your plants.

  4. Step 4

Place your potted herbs in an area of moderate to bright sunlight. Southern exposure is best. Northern exposure is not ideal. In warm seasons, put your herbs outside. They thrive on fresh air.

  5. Step 5

Provide only enough water to keep the soil moist. Over-watering will kill the plants. In most cases, plants do better when under-watered than when they receive too much water. You can add water. You cannot subtract it. Water about once every 2 weeks. Be sure to use the soil moisture as the primary indicator.
