How to Connect a Guitar Pedal

A guitar effects pedal is designed to alter the sound produced by the guitar's amplifier when the guitar is played. Some guitar effects pedals dramatically alter this sound, while others merely complement the sound by slightly altering it. With literally hundreds of different guitar effects pedals on the market, the hardest choice is selecting a pedal to use. Thankfully, once a selection has been made, connecting the guitar pedal is a relatively simple process.

Things You'll Need:

• Two guitar cords

1. Identify the guitar jacks on the guitar pedal. There are two guitar jacks. One is labeled "In" or "Input," and the other is labeled "Out" or "Output."

2. Connect one end of one guitar cord to the jack located on the guitar.

3. Plug the opposite end of this cord into the "In" jack on the guitar pedal.

4. Plug the end of a second guitar cord into the jack on the guitar pedal labeled "Out."

5. Plug the free end of this second guitar cord into the input jack on the guitar's amplifier.

6. Turn the guitar's amplifier on.

7. Activate the guitar pedal by stepping lightly on the pedal's "On" switch, which is located on the top of the guitar pedal.
