How to Install a Hard Drive on a Laptop Computer
Installing a hard drive on a laptop computer is not a hard process in most cases. Some older computers may have to be totally disassembled to install a hard drive, but most new models make the task simple. The only tools you will need are a screwdriver or two. Every laptop varies in where the hard drive is located and the exact process may be slightly different, but the same general procedures will work in most installations.
Things You'll Need
- Laptop user's manual (optional)
- Screwdrivers, slotted or Phillips
- Laptop hard drive
- Laptop hard drive caddy

1
Look through your laptop user's manual to determine where the hard drive bay is in your model of laptop. If you do not have the manual, you can check the manufacturer's website to see if it is available for download. If the manual isn't available, you can still determine this by examining the underside of the laptop.

2
Use either the slotted or the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw holding the hard drive bay cover in place.
-
-
3
Remove the cover from the laptop. In some models, the hard drive caddy will be attached to this cover. In other models the caddy is a separate item.
-
4
Attach the hard drive to the caddy using at least two screws to hold it secure in place.
-
5
Slide the hard drive into the bay, pressing gently to engage the connections between the drive and the computer.
-
6
Replace the cover and the screw holding the cover in place.
-
7
Boot up the computer and install the operating system of your choice.

Tips & Warnings
Be sure to check that you are installing the correct size hard drive for your laptop. Most laptop hard drives are a standard size, but some models may use smaller or larger drives than the standard. Laptop hard drives should not be changed out frequently. Removing and inserting a hard drive often could damage the connection inside the laptop. For extra storage on a laptop computer, consider adding a second hard drive via the USB port or, in some cases, a second hard drive attachment that replaces the CD or DVD drive.
