T-shirts are fun and colorful. They go with slacks as well as jeans and are soft and comfortable. But sometimes women want a more feminine look to go along with comfort. Cutting the sides of a t-shirt and tying the sides down customizes the shirt. It makes the t-shirt more form-fitting and creates a curvy waistline for a flattering, new look. You can wear the shirt as a casual or dressed-up item.

Instructions

  1. How to cut and tie t-shirts

    • 1

Try the T-shirt on. With sewing pins mark the spot where you would like the bottom of the shirt to lie. Keep in mind that when you tie the sides of the shirt, it will be around two inches shorter.

    • 2
      Angle cut

Take the t-shirt and lay it out on a flat surface. Make sure the seams are matching on both sides. Fold the T-shirt in half, lengthwise. Using the sewing pin as a guide, cut directly across the shirt. About five inches from the end cut the shirt down at an angle. This extra material becomes the ties.

      Tie cuts

Turn the t-shirt around so that the front of the shirt is visible. Cut on both sides on the T-shirt seam, going up toward the sleeves. A 6- to 8-inch cut should be fine.

Try the T-shirt on and adjust the ties so that they are even. You will also be able to see if you need to make more adjustments.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cut ties in the front and back of the shirt instead of the sides, for a new style. Cut the sleeves or neckline and tie them off, for added flair. Use a tie belt in the same color to match your T-shirt.

  • Always use sewing pins to mark where all cuts end and try the shirt on between adjustments to avoid mistakes.
