How to Reinstall a DVD-ROM Drive Program Onto Windows XP
There are a number of reasons why a DVD-ROM drive suddenly stops working. One of the major causes is that a file or files have become corrupt and Windows XP simply doesn't know how to use the drive any longer. Often the easiest solution to the problem is to reinstall the DVD-ROM drive program onto Windows XP. This is not a difficult process and will help you to determine if the problem lies with the software or if your DVD-ROM drive need to be replaced.

Check the manufacturer's website for any updated drivers or software for your DVD-ROM drive. If you do not have the original software disks or the drive is not reading disks at all, you can look for the drivers and software to reinstall the drive from the manufacturer's website. If you cannot find the drivers you need from the manufacturer, look for the correct files at Driversguide.com. They have most driver files.

Download and save the files to a folder on your computer.

Navigate to the folder where you saved the files. If the files are in a compressed, or "zip," folder, extract the files first. Double click on the compressed folder and follow the onscreen instructions to extract the files. Navigate to the new folder created by the extraction wizard.

Look in the folder for an icon that says "Setup" or "Install." Double click on that icon.

Follow the onscreen instructions to reinstall the DVD-ROM drivers and the software to use the DVD for viewing or burning.

Reboot your computer after the install program is complete.

Test the DVD-ROM drive and check that the system is fully loaded to make sure that the drive can now read the DVD disks you insert.

* If you complete this process and the DVD-ROM still will not read DVD disks, you may have a faulty drive that will need replacement.
* Be sure and open your case, if you are using a desktop computer, to make sure all the connections going from the motherboard to the DVD drive are secure and in place.
