1
Vacuum the entire room thoroughly. Steam cleaning should not be done on carpeting that has not been vacuumed to pick up any loose particles first.
-
2
Fill the water chamber of the steam cleaner, according to the steam cleaner directions. Using a carpet shampoo on Berber carpet is not recommended; use only water.
-
-
3
Plug in the steam cleaner, and let it heat up to create the steam.
-
4
Starting at the uppermost corner of the room and working in 3-foot patches, slowly drag the steam cleaner back across the Berber carpet. You need to give it ample time to deposit the water and then steam it clean. A 3-foot patch should take you about 30-60 seconds to drag the steam cleaner back, depending on how soiled your carpet is.
-
5
Repeat in a row across the carpet, moving back toward the door with each sweep.
-
6
When you've cleaned the whole room, remove the steam cleaner and dump the soiled water into a toilet and flush.
-
7
Allow ample time for the carpet to dry before entering the room, so as not to soil the damp carpet. Because of the pile height of Berber, it will take 30 minutes to an hour longer than traditional carpet to dry. Test with your hand before stepping into the room.
