Make Wallets

Make your own wallets to go with any outfit and use any novelty prints you desire. These wallets are simple to sew and can be made easily in an afternoon and ready to use by evening. They make wonderful gifts for family and friends, so be prepared to take custom orders. Choose two coordinating fabrics to give contrast between the outside of the wallet, lining and pockets of the wallet. Create these wallets with pockets for cash and cards and a handy snap closure.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut one piece 7 inches wide by 9 inches long from fabric A, and cut one piece 7 inches wide by 9 inches long from fabric B. These pieces are for the main wallet.

    • 2

Cut one piece 4 inches wide by 9 inches long from fabric A, and cut one piece 3 inches wide by 9 inches long from fabric B. These pieces are for the inside ID and card pockets.

    • 3

Fold the 4-inch-wide fabric A pocket strip in half lengthwise with the right sides together and pin. Sew a 1/4-inch seam allowance along the pinned edge. Turn the pocket tube right side out and press. Repeat for the 3-inch-wide fabric B pocket strip.

    • 4

Fold the large fabric A piece in half with the wrong sides together and matching the 9-inch sides. Press the fold.

    • 5

Open the fabric A wallet piece and lay right side up on the table. Lay the seam edge of the fabric A pocket strip 1/4 inch from the crease on the fabric A wallet piece and pin the seamed edge. Top-stitch the pocket as close to the pinned edge as possible.

    • 6

Lay the seam edge of the fabric B pocket against the crease on the fabric A wallet piece and pin the seamed edge. This pocket overlaps the first. Top-stitch the pocket as close to the pinned edge as possible.

    • 7

Place the large fabric B piece on top of the large fabric A piece with the right sides together and pin. Sew a 1/4-inch seam allowance around the edges, leaving a 2-inch opening on a 7-inch side for turning. Turn the wallet right side out and press.

    • 8

Mark the center of the pockets' lengths with straight pins. Top-stitch across the pocket widths at this halfway mark to create the smaller individual pockets of the wallet.

    • 9

Fold the wallet in half, matching the 9-inch sides of the fabric B on the inside. Pin the short sides. This will make the pocket for paper money. Top-stitch the pinned sides using a scant 1/4-inch seam allowance. This will also close the turning opening of the wallet.

    • 10

Attach one half of a snap to the fabric B pocket 1 inch from the side of the wallet. Attach the other half of the snap to the opposite end of the pocket. Fold and snap the wallet closed.
