Floating earrings are a beautiful and simple version of a chandelier earring. They're easy to make, easy to wear in both casual and elegant settings, and make wonderful gifts. With just a few findings, tools and a little bit of time, you'll be able to make floating earrings that go with any outfit and occasion.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Round, two-loop drop charms
  • 2 beads measuring between 6 and 8 mm wide
  • 1 pair of french hooks
  • 2 head pins
  • Wire clippers
  • Jeweler's pliers
  • Jeweler's file
  1. Step 1

Set up your supplies so that you get an idea of how they will look when they are assembled. Lay down the round drop charms next to each other. Place the beads inside, and lay the french hooks directly above the outer loop of the drop charm. Make sure you are happy with the size of the beads in comparison with the diameter of the loop before progressing further.

  2. Step 2

String one of your beads on a head pin. Grasp the head pin wire about 1/8 of an inch above the top of the bead. Bend the wire and make a loop. Thread the wire through the lower loop of the drop charm. Continue to bend the head pin wire until you form a closed loop.

  3. Step 3

Coil the wire around the top of the pin three to four times. Clip the excess wire. File the clipped end to remove any sharp edges. Hold the top loop of the drop charm and jiggle slightly to observe the tension of the bead on the charm. If there isn't enough movement, clip off the head pin and restring on another head pin. Otherwise, continue to the next step.

  4. Step 4

Use your pliers to gently open the loop at the bottom of one of your French hooks. Thread the top loop of your drop charm onto the open loop of the French hook. Close the French hook's loop with your pliers. Be sure to do this gently so that you don't scratch or damage the loop of the French hook.

  5. Step 5

Repeat steps 2 through 4 with your other earring. Try on your earrings to make sure that the bead placement looks even when both earrings are worn together.
