How to Make a Wedding Cake Stand
Wedding cakes are elegant creations. Much thought and planning go into getting just the right wedding cake, but the cake stand is often overlooked. Bakeries frequently charge extra for the cake stand and some may not do anything more than set the cake on weak, foil-covered cardboard. Weak support for the wedding cake results in a crumbled mess. Making a strong, beautiful wedding cake stand yourself is an excellent solution that presents the cake attractively as well as giving it firm support. Does this Spark an idea?

- 1/2-inch plywood sheet
- Saw (optional)
- Sandpaper
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- Paper doily
- Power drill
- Screws
- Screwdriver
- Decorative cabinet knobs
- Glue gun
- Fabric
- Lace
- Silk flowers
- Decorations

Cut a circle from a piece of 1/2-inch plywood with a saw. The circle should be a little bigger than the bottom layer of the wedding cake. If preferred, the plywood can be cut to specification at a lumber yard.

Rub the sandpaper all around the cut plywood circle's edges to remove rough or splintered areas. Continue sanding the wood until it is smooth, carefully keeping the edges evenly sanded.

Paint the wooden plywood circle with the paint and paintbrush. Allow the paint to dry. Add a second coat, if desired. The wedding cake will rest directly on this when finished. Place a paper doily on the wedding cake stand so that the cake does not touch the painted surface.

Drill four holes in the bottom of the cake stand with the power drill. Space them so that the finished cake stand will support the weight of a wedding cake. Make sure the holes are of even depths. Do not drill all the way through the wood, only to the depth of the screws that hold the decorative knobs. Use the screwdriver to screw in the decorative knobs. Flat decorative knobs work the best, but others will work as long as the knobs have a fairly even surface. Turn the wedding cake stand upright.

Squeeze glue from the glue gun around part of the rim of the cake stand circle. Set fabric, silk flowers, beads, tiny mirrors or lace into the glue. Hold in place until the glue is somewhat dry and the items hold on their own. Repeat the process around the rest of the rim. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly before putting the wedding cake on the stand.

Tips & Warnings
Always wear safety goggles when working with plywood to guard against wood dust getting into the eye. Be careful of splintered wood when cutting or sanding wood to avoid getting splinters.
