Step 1
It is important to realized that dogs are dogs. They are not people or children. They deserve to be allowed to be dogs.
-
Step 2
Boundaries are important. Remember that it is your house not the dog's. There should be areas off limits and areas they can not enter unless invited.
-
Step 3
Unwanted behavior should be correct no matter what. Allowing negative behavior as a puppy only creates larger problems as they grow.
-
Step 4
Know the breed you are dealing with. Breeds have specific needs and unique issues. If you acquire a hound dog be prepared for a very vocal dog who wants to use its nose. If you do not provide an outlet for breed specific behavior you will find yourself with a dog who is not getting its mental and emotional needs met. This can lead to destructive and aggressive behavior.
-
Step 5
The energy level of your dog is also important. High energy dogs need a lot of exercise and activity to match their energy level. When dogs lack exercise (both physical and mental) they tend to develop issues.
-
Step 6
Be careful of when you give affection. If your dog is overly excited, scared, or nervous and you show them affection you are telling the dog that you want that behavior or emotion. Again, they are dogs not humans and they do not reason.
-
Step 7
Everything you do is a learning experience and very important to puppies. Every interaction is a chance to teach your dog to be stable and disciplined.
-
Step 8
Remain calm and confident. If you get angry or upset it is a negative energy and your dog will pick up on that. The need a strong leader in order to feel safe and secure.
-
Step 9
Remember to keep everything in balance. Give them plenty of exercise, mental enrichment, and a healthy diet. Dogs can be great companions and are important additions to any home.
