Instructions

Note the items you'll need for your cheap graduation centerpieces.

First note the items you'll need for your cheap graduation centerpieces. I found these tin pails at the dollar store, but you can use clay pots, plain white boxes, jars, or any other base. You need craft sticks or dowels, and make sure they're in proportion to your base. In other words, I used the long ones you see here because my tin is tall, but you might opt for the shorter popsicle stick variety if your base is shorter. Your stickers should be large enough so they look like flowers on your dowel, although they can be of anything and not necessarily flowers themselves.

Put stickers on both sides of your dowels and add ribbon.

You'll adhere your stickers to your dowels, and make sure you've purchased 2 of every variety. This is because your cheap graduation centerpieces will be viewed from all angles, so you'll put a sticker on both sides of your dowels! Then tie a ribbon around the dowel; if you use wired ribbon you can tie a bow or do what I did in the picture - double it over and just tie a nice knot.

Add floral foam and insert your dowels.

Put a piece of floral foam in the bottom of your tin or pot. Floral foam is easily cut and you don't need a big piece. Push your dowels or flowers in and remember to stagger them, leaning some to one side. Adjust the ribbons as necessary, and remember to check it from all sides.

You need something to cover the floral foam. For the cheapest option for your graduation centerpieces, cut green construction paper in 4 pieces and then put it width-wise through your home shredder. That's how I got the small strips here. You can also use Easter grass (such as for baskets), moss used for floral arrangements, crinkle cut packing paper, or cellophane strips. If you use clear jars or containers, make sure you surround and hide your floral foam, otherwise just put some around the top of your container to hide the floral foam.

Dress up your cheap graduation centerpieces with leftovers!

Depending upon what you've used for a base, you may be done or you may want to dress it up with a strip of matching ribbon, additional stickers, and so on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy large stickers so they look appropriate for a centerpiece. Use as many dowels for your inserts as you think looks good. You can even trim them down for added visual interest.
