You can use polymer clay to create many fun charms. These cupcake polymer clay mini's are great to give as gifts. Simply follow the directions in this article and you will be well on your way to creating jewelry charms.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • polymer clay tools
  • 20 gauge silver wire
  • craft knife
  • toaster oven or home oven

The first step to making polymer clay cupcakes is rolling out your clay into balls. Vary the size of your polymer clay balls depending on the size of your finished cupcake. I use clay balls that are a little smaller than a dime in this tutorial.

Take the ball you plan to use as the cake portion of this tutorial and flatten it on your table. You do not want a pancake you only want the top and bottom flattened. Use a round piece of wire to gently crease your cake to form impressions that resemble a cupcake wrapper. If your polymer clay is not holding together well and seems too sticky you can place it in the freezer for a few minutes to stiffen it up.

Cut a piece of craft wire about 3 inches long. You should form a loop on the bottom of the wire and pull it through the bottom of the polymer clay cake. This will ensure that your wire is firmly anchored. Roll out your "topping" to form a long snake. Wrap the polymer clay topping on the top of your cake. Press firmly but do not flatten your topping.

  4. Step 4
    Polymer Clay Sprinkles

To form polymer clay sprinkles simply roll a snake of clay in the color of your choosing. The clay should be the size of a tooth pick point. Using your craft knife cut small pieces from the end and stick them onto your polymer clay.

Polymer clay can be baked in a toaster oven. I recommend using a toaster oven that you will not use again for food use. The clay should be baked per the instructions on your polymer clay package. I use Sculpey brand polymer clay, and i bake my polymer clay sculptures for 20 minutes at 250 degrees. After baking your polymer clay pieces you can apply polymer clay glaze, or clear fingernail polish. Allow the glaze to dry snip the excess wire from your piece and curl the end to form a loop for hanging.

Tips & Warnings
  • Color clay using food coloring.
  • Let your kids choose the type of topping they want.
  • Wash your hands after sculpting with polymer clay.
  • Do not use polymer clay tools for kitchen use.
