Step 1
Buy good hair extensions. Buy human hair that hasn't been processed. This is also known as virgin hair. Run your hands along the shaft of the hair. It should feel smooth if all the cuticles are running in the same direction. That's what keeps it from tangling and matting after you've worn it awhile.

Step 2
Use enough hair. For a full head DIY hair extension job, you'll need just over one pack of hair unless your hair is very thin. Buy two packs and you'll probably have to use only a little of the next pack. The next time you DIY your hair extensions, you should be able to re-use some of the hair from the first time if you bought good hair.

Step 3
Choose the right color of hair. Match the hair to your roots, not your ends. If necessary, apply a rinse to your hair to get it to match the extensions 100%.
