Learn how to create a walk in closet out of a small space in your home.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Measuring Tape
  • Paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Compound
  • Scraper
  • Wall Paper Remover (optional)
  • Closet Rods
  • Closet Stackable Products
  • Shelves
  • Rug
  • Door (optional)
  1. Step 1

Measure room. This will give you an idea of what space you will have to work with.

  2. Step 2

Walls: Remove any old wallpaper (you can use a wallpaper remover spray and a scraper). Repair any existing damage to the walls, fill holes in with compound. Wait for the compound to dry and then sand the areas. Paint walls or re-wallpaper.

  3. Step 3

Closet Rods: Once the paint is dry you can start to add the closet accessories. Hang two closet rods along the smallest wall. Make sure there is enough room in between the rods and the floor to hang long items like coats and dresses. I hung the longer items on the top so I made sure there was enough room in between the top and bottom rods.

  4. Step 4

Stackable closet items: I chose closet maid, available at both Target and Walmart (and other places as well). Make sure the items you chose to stack together are the same size.
Along the longest wall on the left side I added three stackable items, two shelve units with doors and one two drawer unit. You can chose whatever items you want. In the middle I put four stackable shoe racks (double shelves). On the ride side I placed three stackable shelf units. **Remember you can use whatever units you want and can chose the sizes based on the size of your area.**

  5. Step 5

Shelves: along the other short wall I put a shelf. I was able to place sweaters, that should not be hung, on this shelf. Depending on space you can add more shelves.

  6. Step 6

Hooks: I then added hook to the side of the wall where the door is. Make sure you add hooks that are either screwed on or can hold heavy items. I placed belts on one and bags on the others. I also hung some hooks under the shelf. If you put a door up, hang over the door hooks for heavier items like robes and towels.

  7. Step 7

Door: if you chose to add a door, hang door.

  8. Step 8

Reflection: step back and take a look at your work. I bet it looks great!! Make sure you take pictures to show off your handy work.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take your time, you don't have to complete the project in one day.
  • Ask for help when hanging some of the items like the rods and the shelves. This will help you make sure they are straight.
  • Sticky hooks will fall off the wall. Make sure you use ones that are extra strong or you can screw on.
