Instructions

Cobble together a little money. You don't need much to start with. 5 Silver is enough to get you started. You can walk away with 4 Silver by rolling a new character and questing your way out of any newbie zone in the game.

Download the Auctioneer and Postal Addons. Both can be found at www.curse.com, and both are extremely important to making money quickly. Auctioneer is a mod that tracks prices in the Auction Hall and makes posting your items a snap. It is filled with a wealth of options, so take a little time to learn everything before you get started. Postal is a simple Addon that allows you to open all your mail in a single click. While this is not essential, it will save you a lot of time.

Roll a "Banker Alt." This is a new character that will be used exclusively for making money. You needn't supply them with anything; just get them out of the newbie zone, take them to the nearest capital city and park them in front of the mailbox. If you can, supply them with a few large bags (14+ slots is great.) Your Banker Alt should be able to supply their own startup capital from their questing in the newbie zone. You can also sell their clothing for a little extra cash (coppers DO help!)

Make your initial investment. There are lots of ways to make money in the early stages of your quest for Gold. One of the safer ways is to invest in low-level crafting items such as Copper Ore/Bars, Light Leather, Linen Cloth and the like. Such items typically have large profit margins and sell well (mainly because experienced players roll alts and want to level them quickly with money, rather than time.) Purchase a few bars or leather scraps and resell them at a relatively safe profit (110%-125%.)

Diversify. While investing in low-level crafting items is a safe bet, there are plenty of other strategies for making money. Auctioneer's Sales Tools can help you identify the items that are moving (selling) quickly, and how you can most efficiently turn them around. Try and identify five to ten items that consistently sell quickly and for a good profit margin. Use the Bottom Scanner feature to find items that are selling for well under their established price. Buy them, then sell them for an average price for some quick cash.

Keep at it. Playing the Auction Hall up from nothing will take a few days at least, but it can return a massive profit if you invest a little time every day to make things work. As you gain more capital, you can invest in higher items. Level 40 items typically sell well since that is the point when many classes get an armor upgrade (Paladins, Warriors and Death Knights get Plate, Shamans and Hunters get Mail.)

Tips & Warnings

  • Use Bottom Scanner to find vendor trash (grey items) that are selling for below their vendor price. This doesn't happen often, but it happens more than you'd think. Buying these items and selling them to a vendor is another way to make some quick and really easy cash. Auctioneer will always display the Vendor Price for an item, so you can tell right away what to do with it.

  • Consider starting a Banker Alt Guild. This will cost you some cash, but will allow you to purchase a Guild Bank exclusively for your Banker Alt. You needn't fill it with tabs; the bank alone will provide you with a huge space for stored items.

  • Some of your auctions will expire. This is an unavoidable fact of the auction hall. Nobody's auctions, no matter how well they are priced, sell 100% of the time. Quickly identifying items that don't sell well is part of playing the AH.
