Step 1
First switch your Nikon D40 camera to S mode. S mode is called shutter Priority mode. You can choose the shutter speed from values of 30s to 1/4,000s. Your camera will automatically select the aperture that will produce the best exposure.

Step 2
Second, rotate the command knob dial to the desired shutter speed, which is displayed on the viewfinder or LCD screen on your Nikon D40.
Use a slower shutter speed to suggest motion by blurring moving objects, High shutter speed to "freeze" motion. -
Step 3
Third, move the dial on your Nikon D40 to the 30s mode.

Step 4
Fourth make sure you put your Nikon D40 is on a tripod. Frame a photograph, focus, and shoot.
