How to Get a Tax Return Extension

How to get an extension on filing your tax return forms from the IRS

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you are not able to file your federal individual income tax return by the due date, you may be able to get an automatic 6-month extension of time to file.

  2. Step 2

Fill out and File Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Income Tax Return.

  3. Step 3

Be sure to mail the form postmarked by April 15, 2009.

  4. Step 4

Even though you have a 6 month extension, this is only and extension on the time to file your forms, not pay your tax liability. Your tax liability is due on April 15, so if you owe money you will technically be late on your payment and may be charged interest and penalties.

  5. Step 5

If you work and cannot get to the post office before it closes, find the nearest post office that will be open until 12am. You can get your mail postmarked on April 15 as long as you are able to get your mail dropped off by 12 midnight at these post offices.
